AIR CARGO HANDLING

NEW CHALLENGES IN AIR CARGO HANDLING

After a long lull for the past few years, air cargo volumes are finally recovering as we start 2015.

While cargo handling is performed at thousands of airports all over the world by hundreds of handlers and airlines, big and small, the risk for deviations in quality and consistency continue to be a major challenge. IATA actively drives the development of global ground handling standards, best practices and procedures and promotes global consistency and harmonization.

IATA MANUALS:
One of the ways it does this, is by constantly reviewing and updating its existing IATA Manuals such as IATA GROUND OPERATIONS MANUAL and the AIRPORT HANDLING MANUAL to reflect and document cargo operational procedures.

e-Air Waybill(e-AWB):
A major drive is now on, to create an environment which is friendly to acceptance of documents in an e-Air Waybill environment, including the now standard acceptance practices for e-AWB as well as the single-process for the electronic document.

THE STANDARD GROUND HANDLING AGREEMENT/SLA’s:
One of the biggest challenges for air cargo handlers is the non-standardized nature of cargo handling agreements across different airline customers. This “non-standardization” of cargo handling agreements creates multiple and often conflicting performance metrics for handlers, large volumes of paper documents and adds significantly to handling costs. One of the objectives is to simplify and standardize handling agreements globally, so that all handlers understand the language, and are accountable to similar standards. In this context, the language in each contract is of paramount importance.

FACILITY CAPABILITIES MATRIX:
To address the deviations in quality and consistency of cargo handling the development of the FACILITY CAPABILITY MATRIX is a key IATA initiative. The matrix, which began its first pilot project in 2014, will enhance cargo handling capabilities to a consistently high standard, while identifying possible non-compliance in critical areas such as safety or security, especially in key areas such as the cool-chain and pharma businesses.
